Dear Friends,

We are gratified to note that WGBH and members of the AEEF/CWA Local 1300 have reached a collective bargaining agreement. The new contract, which becomes effective immediately, contains the same provisions as the final proposal offered by WGBH in March 2011. WGBH has been operating under the proposal since that time.

We are pleased that the union leadership recognized and acknowledged that WGBH’s final proposal was in the best interests of our institution and all our employees. Our aim was to reach an agreement that would treat all employees equitably and allow WGBH to continue to adapt to the changing media industry and economy, while continuing to be responsible stewards of public and donor funds. We believe this agreement meets those goals, and we appreciate that the union and its members agree.

During the past 14 months, as we have been operating under the provisions of the new proposal, we already have seen positive steps toward the greater flexibility WGBH was seeking for workers across job categories. We have enhanced our local services by expanding local production across TV, radio, and the Web, and delivered more content to the national public media system at lower cost—all of which has provided employees greater professional opportunities. The new contract includes wage increases and a full range of health and related benefits.

We believe this agreement will help WGBH preserve and grow our service to the millions of people, here in New England and beyond, who rely on our educational mission. We greatly appreciate your steadfast support.

AEEF/CWA (Association of Employees of the Educational Foundation/Communications Workers of America) represents approximately 280 employees who work across WGBH as associate producers and editors, marketing and communications professionals, Web designers, membership development professionals, caption writers, physical plant technicians, radio hosts and producers, etc.

On February 25, 2011, after 30 full-day sessions, seven months of negotiations, and three months with the federal mediator, WGBH gave the union its final proposal. In it, WGBH went as far as we could to address the union's concerns and at the same time allow WGBH to adapt to the changing industry and economics. The union rejected WGBH’s final proposal on March 13 of that year. After that time, in accordance with federal labor law, WGBH declared an impasse and implemented the final proposal. On May 30, 2012 with the WGBH-AEEF/CWA agreement, that final proposal became our contract.
