High School Quiz Show - Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is High School Quiz Show?

Produced and broadcast by WGBH, High School Quiz Show is an award-winning single-elimination academic team competition for all high school students in Massachusetts.

2. Who is eligible to participate in High School Quiz Show?

All public, private and parochial high schools in Massachusetts are eligible to participate:

•    Each school must have at least one (1) adult coach. (A maximum of two (2) coaches will be officially recognized on the television broadcast.)

•    Each team must include four (4) participating students and up to two (2) alternates

•    Participating students must be currently enrolled in the school they represent

•    Participating schools may register a maximum of one (1) team

•    Family members of WGBH employees may not participate on a High School Quiz Show team

Only schools that have officially registered and meet the eligibility requirements are invited to WGBH to take the qualifying quiz. To encourage a positive atmosphere and foster good sportsmanship, all participating schools and teams (including coaches, students and administrators) are presumed to be responsible individuals and will be treated as such and are therefore expected to conduct themselves in a responsible and ethical manner. This includes, but is not limited to, treating all other players, coaches and WGBH staff with courtesy, abiding by all decisions of the High School Quiz Show staff, honestly reporting details of game situations to the High School Quiz Show Executive Producer, and promptly reporting violations to the High School Quiz Show Executive Producer.

Coaches and administrators are expected to actively use their influence to enhance sportsmanship in the broadest possible manner and should not engage in conduct that may incite players or audience members during the competitions and tapings. Unsportsmanlike conduct includes any actions or comments by coaches, players, or audience members which are intended to bait, anger, ridicule, or demean others, whether or not the deeds or words are vulgar, or in order to gain an unfair advantage during the competition. Public criticism of WGBH, the crew of High School Quiz Show, and/or any participating team players during the competition or taping will be considered disruptive and unethical.

WGBH at its sole discretion reserves the right to decline participation of a school prior to and at any point during the competition, including future competitions, due to unsportsmanlike, disruptive, or unethical behavior.

3. How does a school determine a team roster?

Participating schools form teams according to their own criteria and selection process. It is strongly recommended that teams include both male and female students.

4. What is Super Sunday?

Super Sunday is a one-day qualifying event to determine the 16 teams that compete in televised matches of High School Quiz Show. Super Sunday for Season 8 will be held at WGBH on Sunday, November 13, 2016. The backup date is Sunday, November 20, 2016.

Only teams (including alternates), coaches and test administrators are permitted in the testing rooms. Due to space constraints, there is a maximum of eight (8) people per team allowed in the testing room: the four (4) primary team members, two (2) alternates and up to two (2) coaches. Parents are not allowed in the testing room. School principals and superintendents may be permitted in the testing room on a case-by-case basis, if an exception is requested in advance and the eight-person maximum will not otherwise be exceeded.

5. How do schools register to participate in Super Sunday?

Between September 14, 2016 and October 3, 2016, schools are required to email highschoolquizshow@wgbh.org with their intention to form a team. The names of the team members are not required at this time.

By October 14, 2016, schools planning to compete are required to submit the names of four (4) team members and two (2) alternates to WGBH by completing this form: http://www.wgbh.org/quizshow/registration.cfm

Registered schools will attend SUPER SUNDAY, the qualifying event, held at WGBH studios in on November 13, 2016. The backup date is November 20, 2016.

6. Can a school change its team members after submitting their team roster for Super Sunday?

If there is a conflict and a registered team member cannot compete on Super Sunday, with approval from WGBH, either: (1) three members of the team can compete on Super Sunday with the expectation that the 4th member will participate in the televised competition if the team qualifies; or (2) an alternate may be permitted to permanently replace the team member who cannot compete for Super Sunday and should the team advance, for the duration of the televised competition.

In order to avoid disappointment, coaches should ensure all official team members have reviewed and can commit to the taping dates and backup dates (see Question #13).

7. What are the rules for Super Sunday?

The rules for Super Sunday can be found here

8. How can teams prepare to compete in High School Quiz Show?

It is strongly recommended that teams and coaches watch past episodes of High School Quiz Show at highschoolquizshow.org and youtube.com/HighSchoolQuizShow to become familiar with the format, pacing, and the types of questions common to academic quiz competitions. 9. What is the time commitment for our team on Super Sunday?

Schools invited to Super Sunday are assigned to one of 4 testing periods held throughout the day. The periods (subject to change) are: 9:30am, 11:15am, 1:45pm or 3:30pm. Teams traveling the greatest distance are typically scheduled in the afternoon. Team members (coach and 4 participating students) must arrange for their own transportation and should expect to stay at WGBH for up to two hours. Alternates may attend but are not permitted to compete.

10. How many teams advance to televised competition following Super Sunday?

The sixteen (16) teams with the highest scores on the Super Sunday qualifying quiz advance to compete in High School Quiz Show.

11. What are the rules for the televised competition?

The rules for competing in the televised competition can be found here

12. Can a school change its team members during the televised competition?

The four students who register as a team and competed on Super Sunday are considered final and it is the assumption of WGBH that these 4 players will attend and compete in all of their scheduled matches. If there is an unavoidable conflict and a team member cannot compete, the coach must contact WGBH with as much advance warning as possible to determine which alternate will replace the team member who cannot compete. The alternate then permanently replaces the team member for the duration of the competition, up to and including matches in future rounds if the team advances.

In order to avoid disappointment, coaches should ensure all official team members have reviewed and can commit to the taping dates and backup dates (see Question #13).

13. When will the matches be taped and televised?

High School Quiz Show Season 8 matches will be taped at the WGBH studios on the following dates in 2017:

•    Saturday, January 21, 2017 (qualifying matches)

•    Sunday, January 22, 2017 (qualifying matches)

•    Saturday, January 28, 2017 (quarterfinals)

•    Sunday, January 29, 2017 (semifinals; state championship; Governors Cup)

•    Saturday, February 4 & Sunday, February 5, 2017 (please hold as backup dates in the event that matches are rescheduled due to inclement weather)

The broadcast dates of the matches are decided at a later date. Check back on highschoolquizshow.org for the schedule.

14. What should the team wear for the televised competition?

Teams are encouraged to wear their school colors! Please remind students to refrain from wearing pinstripes, or all-white shirts. They can wear white if they have a dark colored blazer or other covering.

15. Can our team attend the tapings for other matches?

To protect the integrity of the competition, any school competing in the televised bracket is not allowed to attend other matches. However, once your team is eliminated from the competition, there are no restrictions and you may attend the tapings.

All schools who participated on Super Sunday but are not in the televised bracket are invited to attend a taping! Your school will be given priority seating. The reservation form can be found here, and is also available on highschoolquizshow.org. Seats are free but must be reserved in advance.

16. What does the championship team win?

In addition to the title of High School Quiz Show State Champion, the winning team receives:

•    A High School Quiz Show trophy

•    Commemorative plaques for each team member and coach

•    A banner for the school

•    An award of $1000 toward the team/school to be used in such a way as deemed most appropriate and beneficial by the school’s administrators.
