Austen's Powers

Our guest, literary critic William Deresiewicz, was once a cynical graduate student, pursuing his Ph.D. in English literature. At the time he preferred the stuff of the muscular literary giants: Joyce, Faulkner, Conrad.

Jane Austen was just frivolous --the fluffy stuff of costume dramas-- but all  that changed when we was assigned Emma. He documents the great transformation in his new book: A Jane Austen Education: How Six Novels Taught Me About Love, Friendship, and the Things That Really Matter.

Listeners, we know there are those who love and loathe Jane Austen. Tell us the Jane Austen novel that changed your world or turned you off from 19th century "chick lit" forever. Leave a comment hear on this page, or at our facebook page.
