Behind the Scenes of A Celtic Sojourn, Live
Saturday, August 23, 2014, 4:30-7pm
Tickets: $25 Members; $35 Non-Members
You’re invited to our summer installment of A Celtic Sojourn, Live!
Join host Brian O’Donovan in his ongoing exploration of the “roots and branches” of Celtic music. On Aug. 23, Brian will introduce three contrasting bands representing this broadness in the genre: Susie Petrov (piano) and Calum Pasqua (fiddle) playing together, Hannah Sanders and Liz Simmons, and the group Alba’s Edge.
After the live performance, you can enjoy a reception with the musicians or tour our studios. Please note, doors close at 5pm for the performance.
Susie Petrov has been performing Scottish music since 1980. She and Calum Pasqua met a long time ago, but their professional association began in 2006 when Susie heard Calum play the winning set in the New England Regional Fiddle Championship. (Calum also is the first American ever to win the Glennfiddich Scottish Fiddle Championship.)
Alba's Edge is a quartet that thrives on the common ground among Celtic traditions, jazz improvisation and Latin/funk grooves. Their infectious sound has been called "a wonderful concoction" on BBC Radio Scotland and most recently has led them to tour Mexico under the auspices of the US Consulate in Guadalajara. The band is co-led by brother and sister Neil and Lilly Pearlman on piano and fiddle, and rounded out by Doug Berns on bass and Jacob Cole on percussion.
Hannah Sanders (The Dunns) from Old England, and Liz Simmons (The John Whelan Band, Annalivia, Long Time Courting) from New England, join forces to create a harmonic blend of voice and guitar. Their music draws from English musical traditions as well as American old time, blues and contemporary folk. Even though these gals grew up with an ocean between them, they had similar childhoods spent traveling with musician parents, and were exposed to many different styles of music, traditional folk and rock and roll among them. Hannah and Liz have impressed audiences with their unique, haunting vocal blend, their guitar chops, and their witty stage banter. Currently they are touring in support of their new EP World Begun.
